The University of Virginia is in the process of designing a memorial to the enslaved people who labored on Grounds building and maintaining the University. The Memorial to Enslaved Laborers provides a significant opportunity to express UVA’s current ideals for the future while addressing a complex past. At the September 2016 meeting of the Board of Visitors, the design team of Höweler + Yoon, Mabel Wilson, Gregg Bleam Landscape Architect, and UVA’s own Frank Dukes was approved to design the Memorial to Enslaved Laborers at the University of Virginia. The design process occurred during the 2016-2017 academic year and involved extensive meetings with community groups and UVA stakeholders, listening and translating their ideas into a design that
honors the legacy of the enslaved.

The design team engaged the public during events held at local churches as well as the Jefferson School African American Heritage Center between September 2016 and March 2017. The design team welcomes your feedback via this survey.
